Product photography of home decor and home accessories, in-house

Product photography of home accessories works best with a fixed light box that gives even light from all sides. You show the texture of textiles, the shine of glass and chrome and the shape of candles and small furniture exactly as they are, and you take the same series of photos of every item for your webshop and social media.

Product photography of home accessories in the MagicBOX

In short

  • Home decor is a mixed range: textiles, candles, glass, chrome and small furniture. Each material reacts differently to light.
  • Shiny metal, chrome and glass cause reflections. Even light from all sides and the door with a hole keep that under control.
  • Buyers are interior shops, interior brands, webshops and gift shops. With your own MagicBOX you photograph everything in the same set-up.
  • With your own MagicBOX you are flexible: you take the photo whenever you want, including for social media.
  • Outsourcing a photo costs €15–€20 on average. With 4 photos per item, that is €60–€80.

Why are home accessories difficult to photograph?

Because one range mixes many materials: soft fabrics, shiny glass and chrome, candles and small furniture. Each material asks something different of the light.

Interior shops, interior brands, webshops and gift shops sell mainly through their webshop and social media. Buyers judge the item on the photo alone, so the photo has to show the texture and finish as they really are.

Who takes the photos depends on the company: larger companies sometimes have a dedicated member of staff, while in small companies the owner usually does it.

  • ReflectionsShiny items, chrome and glass reflect lamps and your surroundings. Harsh lamps create hotspots.
  • Textiles and textureWith cushions and throws, the texture of the fabric counts. Without harsh shadows it stays visible.
  • Many types of itemsCandles, textiles, glass and small furniture mixed together: one fixed set-up keeps your range looking consistent.

How do you take product photos of home accessories for your webshop?

Set up one fixed arrangement and photograph every item the same way, including detail shots. That way every home accessory gets a packshot in the same style.

  1. Set up your camera oncePut the camera on a tripod in front of the MagicBOX and set it up properly once. After that, every item gets the same settings.
  2. Place the item in the MagicBOXPut the item in a fixed position. Photograph small furniture from several sides as well.
  3. Use the door for reflectionsDo you still see reflections on shiny or chrome items or glass? Then photograph through the hole in the door.
  4. Take the main photo and detail shotsPhotograph the whole item and then the details a buyer wants to see, such as the fabric, the material or the finish.
  5. Put the photos in your webshopAdd the photos to the item. Or make a 360° video with a model that has a turntable.

Which background and lighting work best for home accessories?

Even light from all sides and a calm, plain background.

The MagicBOX lights the item from all sides. That means no harsh shadows, the texture of textiles stays visible and reflections on glass and chrome are reduced. The background stays calm and white, so you get a product photo of home accessories on a white background and all the attention goes to the item. The photos are ready to use straight away, with little to no post-processing. MagicBOX does not remove backgrounds or edit photos; the advantage lies in the even light you start with.

With an even, sharp base photo you can then create lifestyle images yourself with AI tools, without having to build a styled set. MagicBOX does not make those lifestyle images for you.

Camera or smartphone: which suits home accessories?

Both work: a smartphone is fine for a few items, while a camera on a tripod is better suited to a whole collection.

With a camera, you set up the settings for the MagicBOX once and then get the same photo for every item. After purchase, you receive tips and tricks for the settings on your camera or smartphone in combination with the MagicBOX; you can also find them on the page Tips & tricks for using the MagicBOX.

Tricky cases

Shiny metal, chrome and glass

These items reflect lamps, you and your camera. The door with a hole for the lens solves this: you photograph through the hole and the reflection disappears. (The smaller MagicBOX models come with a door as standard; for the larger models it can be ordered as an extra.)

Textiles and texture

With cushions and throws, the texture of the fabric counts. Even light without harsh shadows shows it as it really is. Take a detail shot of the fabric as well.

Candles and small furniture

Candles have a sheen that quickly creates hotspots. The diffuse light from all sides keeps that under control. Photograph small furniture, such as a stool, from several sides.

Large or unusual products

If your product does not fit a standard model, a custom build is possible, for example in a different size. We are happy to think along with you about specific requirements; in that case, please contact Ronald.

Can you make a 360° video of a home accessory?

Yes, with a turntable. That way buyers see the item from every side.

The MagicBOX Square 360° and the MagicBOX Large 360° have a built-in turntable. A separate turntable is available as an accessory. A 360° recording takes 1 minute.
You can find more examples on the page 360° product videos.

Photograph it yourself or outsource it?

With your own MagicBOX you are much more flexible: you take the photo whenever you want. For social media you want to act straight away, not wait until a photographer has time.

Outsourcing a photo costs €15–€20 on average. With 4 photos per item, that is €60–€80. A MagicBOX Large costs €2,065; as a worked example, it pays for itself after roughly 26 to 34 items. The actual payback time depends on how much you photograph. As the seller, you are also more critical of your own products than a hired photographer: you know what the buyer looks for.
