Clothing product photography in-house: clothing and textiles
Clothing product photography works best with a fixed light box that lights evenly from every side. That way you see the fabric, colour and details exactly as they are, and you take the same series of photos of every item: on a mannequin or model, on a torso or laid flat (flat lay). That narrows the gap between photo and reality.

In short
- With clothing, returns are the biggest problem. So the most important thing is that the photo matches reality: colour, fabric and finish.
- Fabric matters with clothing, so detail shots are really necessary.
- You photograph clothing on a mannequin or model, on a torso (for example tops) or flat as a flat lay. For each of these there is a suitable MagicBOX.
- Many fashion businesses now have their photos taken by a photographer, in-house or external. With your own MagicBOX you have a professional set-up yourself, with the right light and the same result every time.
- Outsourcing a product photo costs €15–€20 on average. At 4 photos per item, that is €60–€80.
Why is photographing clothing so difficult?
Because the buyer cannot feel the fabric, so the photo has to show exactly what they will get. If it does not, the item comes back.
With clothing, returns are the biggest problem. A buyer orders from the photo, and the colour, fabric and finish have to match what is in the box. Many fashion businesses have their photos taken by a photographer, in their own studio or externally. That costs time and money, especially with every new collection.
Who takes the photos depends on the company: larger businesses sometimes have a dedicated member of staff, in small ones the owner usually does it.
- Photo versus realityThe colour and look of the fabric have to match the real item. That prevents disappointment for the buyer.
- Fabric and detailFabric matters with clothing. A detail shot shows texture, stitching and finish.
- Shape and presentationClothing drapes and creases. On a mannequin or model, on a torso or flat: keep the presentation the same for every item.
How do you take product photos of clothing for your webshop?
Choose one fixed way of presenting, set up one fixed arrangement and photograph every item the same way, including detail shots.
- Choose your presentationDo you photograph on a mannequin or model, on a torso or flat (flat lay)? Choose one way per product group and stick to it.
- Set up your camera oncePut the camera on a tripod in front of the MagicBOX and set it up properly once. After that you have the same settings for every item.
- Photograph the whole itemTake the overview photo first, with the clothing neatly presented.
- Add detail shotsPhotograph the fabric, stitching, buttons, labels and finish. That matters with clothing, because the buyer judges the fabric from the photo.
- Check the colourDoes the colour in the photo match the real item? Check the result next to the clothing itself.
Which background and lighting work best for clothing?
Even light from every side and a calm, plain background.
The MagicBOX lights the clothing from every side. That means no hard shadows, fabric and details stay visible and the colour comes out as it really is. The background stays calm and white, so you get a clothing product photo on a white background with all the attention on the clothing. The photos are ready to use straight away, with little or no editing. MagicBOX does not remove backgrounds or edit photos itself; the advantage lies in the even light you start with.
Camera or smartphone: what suits clothing?
Both work: a smartphone is fine for a few items, a camera on a tripod suits a whole collection better.
With a camera you set the settings once on the MagicBOX and then get the same photo for every item. After your purchase you receive tips and tricks for the settings of your camera or smartphone in combination with the MagicBOX; you will also find them on the page Tips & tricks for using the MagicBOX.
Tricky cases
Photo versus reality
This is the most important point with clothing, because returns are the biggest problem. The light of the MagicBOX comes from every side and has daylight quality, so the colour in the photo is closer to the real item. Always check the result next to the clothing itself.
Fabric and detail
Fabric matters with clothing. As well as the whole item, photograph the fabric close up, the stitching, buttons and labels. A detail shot is really necessary with clothing, because the buyer cannot feel the fabric.
On a mannequin, on a torso or flat
You photograph clothing on a mannequin or model, on a torso (for example tops) or laid flat as a flat lay. For each of these there is a suitable MagicBOX; see below.
Large or unusual products
If your product does not fit a standard model, a custom build is possible, for example in a different size. For specific requirements we are happy to think along with you; in that case please contact Ronald.
Can you make a 360° video of clothing?
Yes, with a turntable. That way buyers see the item from every side.
For the MagicBOX XL and MagicBOX XXL there is a separate turntable that can carry up to about 100 kg. The MagicBOX Square 360° and the MagicBOX Large 360° (for smaller items) have a built-in turntable. A separate turntable is available as an accessory. A 360° recording takes 1 minute.
You can see more examples on the page 360° product videos.
