Product photography of Christmas hampers and gift sets, in-house
Product photography of Christmas hampers works best with a fixed light box that gives even light from all sides. Every product in the hamper and the packaging stay clearly visible, even with cellophane around them, and you decide the composition yourself, without waiting for a photographer.

In short
- A Christmas hamper contains many different products. Everything has to be clearly visible, and the packaging or box often needs to be in the shot too.
- With your own MagicBOX you decide the composition yourself. A photographer often takes longer because of the styling, and the composition is not always what you had in mind.
- Cellophane and glossy packaging cause reflections.
- For most hampers, the MagicBOX Frame Pro Extra (€3,500) is a good fit. For wider hampers there is the Frame Pro Extra Horizontal (€3,600), and the MagicBOX XL (€2,875) can be used on its side.
- Outsourcing a photo costs €15–€20 on average. With 4 photos per item, that is €60–€80.
Why are Christmas hampers difficult to photograph?
Because a hamper contains many different products, and everything has to be clearly visible.
Hamper companies put together hampers that become part of their standard range, but the range changes every year. They also make bespoke hampers. The biggest market is the Christmas hamper, alongside gift sets for special occasions. The photos are needed for the webshop and often for a printed catalogue as well.
Many companies have their photos taken by a photographer. A Christmas hamper needs a lot of styling, and that is where you are the professional. The photographer therefore often takes longer, and the composition is not always what you had in mind. That is why photographing it yourself pays off especially well in this industry.
- Many products in one shotComposing many different items is more complicated than with a single product. Everything has to be clearly visible.
- Packaging and boxThe packaging or box often needs to be in the shot too, so the customer can see what they will receive.
- Cellophane and reflectionsCellophane reflects lamps and your surroundings, while everything still has to stay clearly in view.
How do you take product photos of Christmas hampers for your webshop?
Set up one fixed arrangement and build every hamper the same way, using different heights so that everything is visible.
- Set up your camera oncePut the camera on a tripod in front of the MagicBOX and set it up properly once. After that, every hamper gets the same settings.
- Build the hamper in the MagicBOXArrange the products together and work with different heights so that everything is clearly visible. Add the packaging or box if it needs to be in the shot.
- Photograph the hamperTake the photos you need for your webshop and catalogue, for example the hamper in its box and the products next to it.
- Use the door for reflectionsDo you see reflections on cellophane or glossy packaging? Then photograph through the hole in the door.
- Put the photos onlineAdd them to your webshop, catalogue and social media.
Which background and lighting work best for Christmas hampers?
Even light from all sides and a calm, white background.
The MagicBOX lights the hamper from all sides. That means no harsh shadows, every product stays visible, and reflections on cellophane and glossy packaging are reduced. The background stays calm and white, so you get a product photo of a Christmas hamper on a white background and all the attention goes to the hamper. The photos are ready to use straight away, with little to no post-processing. MagicBOX does not remove backgrounds or edit photos; the advantage lies in the even light you start with.
Camera or smartphone: which suits Christmas hampers?
Both work: a smartphone is fine for a few hampers, while a camera on a tripod is better suited to a whole collection.
With a camera, you set up the settings for the MagicBOX once and then get the same photo for every hamper. After purchase, you receive tips and tricks for the settings on your camera or smartphone in combination with the MagicBOX; you can also find them on the page Tips & tricks for using the MagicBOX.
Tricky cases
Many different products in one photo
The composition here is more complicated than when you photograph a single product. Everything has to be clearly visible, and the packaging or box often needs to be in the shot too. So place the products at different heights, so that nothing disappears behind something else.
Cellophane and glossy packaging
Cellophane reflects lamps, you and your camera. The door with a hole for the lens solves this: you photograph through the hole and the reflection disappears. (The smaller MagicBOX models come with a door as standard; for the larger models it can be ordered as an extra.)
Large or unusual hampers
If your hamper does not fit a standard model, a custom build is possible, for example in a different size. We are happy to think along with you about specific requirements; in that case, please contact Ronald.
Can you make a 360° video of a product from a Christmas hamper?
Yes, with a turntable. That way buyers see the product from every side.
A separate turntable is available as an accessory and can also be used in the MagicBOX Frame Pro Extra, including for heavier products. A 360° recording takes 1 minute. Below you can see a bag of festive chocolates, a product that could be part of a Christmas hamper.
You can find more examples on the page 360° product videos.

Photograph it yourself or outsource it?
With your own MagicBOX you are much more flexible: you take the photo whenever you want. For social media you want to act straight away, not wait until a photographer has time.
A Christmas hamper needs a lot of styling, and that is where you are the professional. A photographer often takes longer over it, and the composition is not always what you had in mind. Outsourcing a photo costs €15–€20 on average, not counting the cost of styling. With 4 photos per item, that is €60–€80. The actual payback time depends on how much you photograph. As the seller, you are also more critical of your own products than a hired photographer.
| Your own MagicBOX | External photographer | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | One-off, for example €3,500 for the Frame Pro Extra | €15–€20 per photo on average |
| Turnaround | Immediate, at your own location, whenever you want | Scheduling and waiting |
| Composition | You decide how the hamper is presented | Often takes longer over the styling, and not always the way you had in mind |
